Dennis Quaid and (wife) Kimberly Buffington’s newborn babies (born November 8th) were accidentally given an overdose of Heparin at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Heparin is an anti-coagulant that is usually used for breaking up blood clots. Generally, babies are given a 10-unit dose, but instead they (and others) were given a 10,000-unit dose.
Initially, it was thought that the error came from a nurse who grabbed the wrong dosage because of improper storage. The hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Langberg said, “This was a preventable error, involving a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures, and there is no excuse for that.” He also said they are taking “…all necessary steps to ensure this never happens again.”
Dennis and Kimberly issued a statement thanking everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers.
