As you may or may not know, Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” is back on the air. As Jay told his audience, “I write jokes. We are following the guild thing - we can write for ourselves.” The Writer’s Guild of American (WGA) which is still on strike, felt differently. They say that since Jay has been a writer on his own show, the strike rule applies.
The WGA does have an exception to their rule, “Material written by the person who delivers it on the air” is allowed. And in my opinion, that’s what Jay’s doing. Jay says that he’s going back to the days of write down an idea as it comes to him, then waking up his wife to see if it’s funny. Poor woman. I mean, I bet they are, but seriously - hasn’t Jay ever heard of a good night’s sleep?
Here’s the thing: Jay has been standing by his writers and his staff, he paid them through the end of 2007, even for when they weren’t working. I personally think the WGA should give him a break: he’s been supporting them, and if they turn on him, it won’t help matters.
